Please read about how long timeframes are before calling to check on progress.

There are many ways in which the Conservation Team can give advice. Please note that the information available through this route is for listed buildings ONLY. If you need planning advice, please use the Planning Pre-application service.

General advice

If you’re thinking about buying a listed building and have some general questions about any restrictions there may be, or for listed building owners who are not sure whether Listed Building Consent (LBC) would be required for their proposals.

Using this form you can book a 15-minute call from a Conservation Officer.

Site visit and discussion

A discussion on site with a Conservation Officer. Please note no written feedback is provided with this service. The fee is £228 and you will need to complete the form for the site visit to be arranged.

Timeframe: site visits for general advice can usually be set up within 10 days from validation. There is no need to submit plans or information beforehand, although anything you can send could aid discussions.

Pre-application advice

This is a more formal process for proposals that may involve complex or extensive changes to a listed building. It includes a site visit and written advice, A one-off fee of £462 is payable on application. If you wish for a meeting following the site visit, the fee is £576.

Submissions for pre-application advice will need to include a location plan and some text on the background to the proposals. If available, any proposed drawings or sketches would also be useful so that the Conservation Officer has an idea of what is being considered before they come to site.

Timeframe: once this information has been submitted and validated, a site visit can generally be arranged within the next 10 days from receipt in the Conservation Team. A written response is then provided within 2 weeks of the site visit.
