We are looking to fill a permanent post, within the Built Environment team of Built and Natural Environment - a multi disciplinary team of technical officers comprises Urban Designers, Heritage Specialists, Ecologists, Landscape Designers, Aboriculturist within the Greater Cambridge Planning Service, a shared planning service between Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council. What sets us apart from other organisations is our range of projects from meeting the planning needs of Europe’s most important biotechnology cluster, regeneration schemes to providing new low carbon districts and developing the first joint Local Plan in one of the fastest-growing city economy in the country.

Our combined growth agenda includes a range of new settlements within South Cambridgeshire and urban extensions to Cambridge. These include strategic new town development projects in Waterbeach (up to 11,000 homes), Northstowe (up to 10,000 homes) and an urban extension in Eddington (3,000 homes).


This role will play an important part in securing the role of planning in responding to the Climate Emergency and the delivery of net zero carbon by 2050. Responding to the climate emergency is an important part of maintaining and creating great places to live, work and visit. It is an integral part of place making and delivering high quality sustainable development in one of the fastest growing areas of the UK.


It’s an exciting time for an experienced sustainable construction professional to work in this high-profile location, with a strong reputation for the quality of the built environment. The post holder will provide advice on planning applications, promote sustainable development practices and develop policies to ensure that responding to climate change continues to be recognised as one of the key components of sustainable development.


The service is currently implementing phase 2 of our shared service which will fully integrate the two authorities planning teams with a significant ICT upgrade underway.
